Remember to take certain steps following a vehicle accident

Your nerves will take a beating due to any kind of car crash, even if you are only involved in a fender bender. However, once you calm down a bit, there are steps you should remember to take that will help your case.

Here are some items to put on your post-accident to-do list:

1. Perform a medical check

First things first: Check yourself and anyone with you for injuries. Even if you only suffer bumps and bruises, it is a good idea to call 911. Anytime you are in a car accident, always seek prompt medical attention, as this will be important when it comes to filing a claim for financial compensation.

2. Make calls

The police should be at the top of the call list. Once an officer arrives, take down his or her name and badge number and ask for a copy of the police report when completed. Next, call your insurance company claims representative to report the accident, and your attorney, who will deal with the other driver’s insurance company in matters regarding a settlement.

3. Exchange information

You should exchange auto insurance information with the other driver, but otherwise, only engage in small talk. Never express your opinion about how the crash happened and above all, never take ownership, even if you think you were at fault. Did anyone else see the accident? Take down the names and contact information for any witnesses.

4. Take notes and pictures

Record as much information about the crash as possible. Write down license plate numbers as well as vehicle identification numbers and the year and model of each car. Make a note of the accident location and details such as weather conditions, the direction in which you were traveling and the direction in which the other driver was traveling. Use your smartphone to take pictures of the crash site and the damage to your vehicle.

Accident information, as much as you can collect, will be important for you to give to your attorney. The insurance companies will begin to haggle with each other, and your attorney will enter into negotiations on your behalf to seek fair compensation for injuries and damages related to the crash.
